Waste Water

The remaining 15% of brewery waste is made up of waste water, trub, excess yeast and waste beer. Water is a major input for the production of beer, used for malting, brewing the wort and filtering (Briggs & Hough, 1981). Consequently, water is also a substantial waste product for breweries. The waste water is contaminated with chemicals and organic compounds, collected during the brewing process. This waste water has to be removed from the brewing site, and dumped in local sewer systems, polluting the waterways and raising environmental concern. On-site water treating systems have been developed to transform organic compound found in effluent into methane, a potential power source (Lascher, 2014).
